Berriew beaters (1996)

A small project this one, spending a few days documenting beaters on a pheasant shoot in Montgomeryshire, Wales. The beaters organise drives through the woodlands, which force startled pheasants to fly up towards the awaiting shooting positions. The higher they fly, the more likely it is they survive another day. This was a working community with a great and sensitive appreciation of the land.

Newbury bypass (1996)

Building a bypass around a town usually causes destruction of woodland, and often these are old. The Newbury bypass was one of a number of sites where direct-action and organised-resistance was used as an effective protest against the logistics and planned destruction of these habitats. Protestors, police, and additional security all had differing commitments, and these tensions would play out in the cold mornings of the quietly diminishing winter woods.
